Welcome from President Nancey Keeler
The South Carolina Art Education Association has been in existence since 1924. Our organization has grown from a small part of the South Carolina Education Association to an independent and strong voice in education in our state. Currently we have over 500 members that give their time and energy to promoting quality arts education for all students. The SCAEA board works with other arts agencies and organizations in promoting the arts and advocating for quality arts education in our state. Our president, past president, and president-elect serve on the Council of Arts Education Presidents (CAEP) with officers from the music, drama, and dance associations. This collaboration resulted in the landmark document, “Where We Stand,” a position statement on arts education for state that is serving as model for other state and national advocacy efforts. Each October, our association presents an annual staff development conference held in one of four regions of the state. At this conference, we feature guest speakers, artists, commercial vendors, and presentations and workshops for our members and guests. Attendees include pre-service art educators, teachers from every level, and retired members. In addition to our annual conference, we sponsor mini-conferences across the state including Art Walks. The Art Walks are art teacher field trips designed to provide members with experiences and information about artists and art resources across the state. We also sponsor the annual Art Honor Society conference for high school students and their teachers.
