Watercolor Pencils?

Tue Mar 09, 2010 @ 01:38PM

I'm currently using these in a landscape lesson with 5th graders. I'm not crazy about the results. The students have more control than with traditional pan sets but the colors are not very vibrant. Any suggestions? What's the best brand? What techniques work best for you? Thanks!

The only ones I have used are Prismacolor and I like the control and the colors. I haven't tried to get vibrant colors with them. Are the students using a LOT of water? I use the paintbrush then take the pencil to get into the tiny places. Nancey Keeler and Kim at Batesburg-Leesviell are great watercolorists and I'm sure would be willing to share their expertise!

Thanks? I"m using a generic catalog brand now. I think the colors would be more intense with a better brand. I'll have to try out a few more.

I traveled in Mexico one summer and used Watercolor pencils as my sketching tool. I found that layering helped. 1. Color with the pencils, 2. wash, dab or stroke with water and let dry, 3. Add second layer (possibly with cross hatch, stipple, or controlled scribbles), Repeat as needed.
