Award Nominations

Help SCAEA recognize outstanding educators from across the state!
​
Nominate a member of the arts community for their outstanding commitment, involvement, and support.
Awards will be presented during the fall SCAEA conference at our annual awards ceremony.

​Our SCAEA awards, grants, & scholarships program objectives are to
  • recognize excellence in the many outstanding individuals, programs and supporters of art education in South Carolina;
  • focus professional attention on quality art education and exemplary art educators;
  • increase public awareness of the importance of quality art education;
  • set standards for quality education and demonstrate achievement;
  • provide tangible recognition of members' achievements;
  • earn respect of colleagues; and 
  • enhance professional opportunities for SCAEA members.
SCAEA members who meet the established criteria, and non-SCAEA members where applicable, are eligible to receive an SCAEA award. Please review the criteria for each award as listed under the link before completing your nomination.
Educator of the year category

Nomination Deadline: AUGUST 31, 2023

Required documents for all Educator of the Year Category Awards include
  • nominee's current résumé;
  • letter of nomination;
  • letter of support; and
  • photograph of the nominee.​​

Educator of the Year

The individuals nominated for Educator of the Year Awards must
  • hold an active SCAEA membership;
  • demonstrate outstanding teaching and program development;
  • demonstrate strong advocacy for the profession; and
  • have a history of active participation in SCAEA at the local and state level.

​Arts Administrator of the Year and Museum Educator of the Year

​The individual nominated for Arts Administrator or Museum Educator of the Year Award must
  • demonstrate outstanding teaching and program development and
  • demonstrate strong advocacy for the profession.

The individual nominated in this award category must
  • teach at the K-12 level;
  • hold an active SCAEA membership;
  • have been an SCAEA member for three consecutive years;
  • demonstrate outstanding teaching and program development;
  • demonstrate strong advocacy of the arts;
  • have served within SCAEA; and
  • be willing to represent SCAEA at NAEA Regional Awards Ceremony.

Promising Young professional

​The individual must
  • have an active SCAEA membership;
  • be an educator at the k-12 level;
  • demonstrate excellence in teaching art;
  • demonstrate advocacy for art education at the local, state, and national level;
  • exhibit leadership potential within the profession and/or SCAEA; and
  • be within the initial five (5) years of their career as an arts educator.

The individual must
  • have an active SCAEA membership and
  • demonstrate leadership at the secondary level (grades 9-12) through sponsorship of an active National Art Honor Society Chapter.

  • demonstrate consistent support and commitment both philosophically and financially to art programs at their school.

Business Supporter of Art Education

Individual nominated does not need to hold an active SCAEA membership.
Individual/Business must
  • make monetary donation(s), goods donation(s), or exhibition space donation(s);
  • volunteer support of arts education; and
  • provide assistance for the publicity and advocacy of art education.

Mary Whyte Art Educator Award

Application DEADLINE: AUGUST 31, 2023

Picture

Established in 2007, the Mary Whyte Art Educator Award (detailed information  / apply here) is designed to highlight a visual arts teacher in a South Carolina public school who has demonstrated superior commitment to their students and craft. The award is accompanied by a cash prize of $2,500 and a $2,500 gift certificate for art supplies.  

​Necessary documents to complete this application include
  • a photo of the applicant;
  • a current résumé, highlighting work history and community involvement;
  • two (2) letters of support;
  • a complete lesson plan;
  • ten (10) examples of student work (be sure to indicate which are from the submitted lesson plan);
  • a portfolio showcasing your personal work as an artist; and
  • a paragraph summarizing your goals and accomplishments as an educator.

​​The applicant must demonstrate superior commitment to their students and craft.
The winner is expected to present at the SCAEA conference the following year.
The amount awarded may be up to a total of $5,000.
